Whether you decide to go deep into the mountains or stay closer to home, you need to have the essential items that will provide you with comfort and safety. What you will take with you depends on the length of the hike and the capacity of your backpack. Before embarking on the trip, you need to check the weather forecast so you can dress appropriately. You should pack some spare clothes in case of a sudden change of climate. It is best to take moisture-wicking garments as they will keep you dry and comfortable. Regarding the footwear, decide on the type of shoes based on the terrain. For gentle hikes on smooth trails you only need quality hiking shoes or trail sneakers. However, for rocky, rugged trails you will need boots. You should pack an extra pair just in case.
The next essential items are the nutrients and water. You should take snacks such as energy bars and nuts that you can eat easily while hiking without having to stop. You can also fix some sandwiches with ingredients that won’t go bad (for example a crusty loaf of bread, slices of prosciutto, smoked turkey or top quality ham, slices of cheese). When deciding on how much water to take, you should consider the length of the hike, the weather conditions, your age, sweat rate and body type as well. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t take less than 2 litres of water. For storing purposes you need to have top quality water bottles, for example, sport drinking bottles that are BPA free and made of stainless steel so that your water can be fresh and cold during the hike. Also, keep in mind that you can use different sized sport drinking bottles if you don’t want the whole amount of water to be kept in one reservoir.
Furthermore, you need navigation which will help you move forward and in the right direction. So, a map and a compass are a must or if you are addicted to technology, a smartphone with a good application for navigation will do the job just fine. However, don’t forget that smartphones’ batteries are draining fast, so it might be a better idea to stick to the traditional ways of navigation.
Additionally, you are going to need an emergency and a first aid kit which can save your life when something bad like an injury and accident happens. So, make sure you have all the important items in the kit like plasters in different sizes and shapes, sterile gauze dressings, triangular bandages, crepe rolled bandages, safety pins, sterile gloves, tweezers, selected medicine, tape, skin rash cream or spray, painkillers. Also, matches or firestarters are important, and a whistle for SOS calls.
Finally, you should pack a multi-tool kit usually consisting of a piler, a blade, a file, and a driver which can be used to cut, pry, saw and repair almost anything. Also, you should pack a light torch with a great lumen capacity so you can illuminate dark areas along the trail. You should be careful the pack capacity not to exceed 30% of your total body weight as it will be heavy to carry and will cause you discomfort.
